DLF, Unitech, Infinity Info to invest in WB

The West Bengal government is in talks with undisclosed anchor investors for its proposed Rs 100-crore semiconductor facility India Design Centre (IDC) in Kolkata. The anchor investor is likely to be a large global semiconductor firm that will develop either an R&D unit or a state-of-the-art VLSI facility at the proposed IDC complex. The state government is in talks with firms operating in the Indian semiconductor spectrum that involves VLSI design, assembling, testing and packaging, but excludes wafer-fab manufacturing.

The VLSI (very large-scale integration) is a term used to denote integrated circuits made by combining thousands of transistor-based circuits into a single chip. In line with this, the state government plans to make IDC operational in nine months. We recently invited bids from private players keen on building the facility. We expect the facility will be completely occupied by end-2008, West Bengal IT minister Debesh Das said. According to industry sources, DLF Group, Unitech Group and Infinity Infotech Parks are some of the bidders in the project. Mr Das, however, declined to name the frontrunner in the race to grab the IDC construction mandate. IBM recently gave a proposal to invest in a prototype fab development unit in IDC. Talks are on with several other firms, but it is too preliminary to disclose names, Mr Das added.

Webel managing director Debanjan Dutta said West Bengak government is in talks with member companies of the apex semiconductor industry body India Semiconductor Association (ISA). It may be noted that ISA members include firms like Moser Baer, Texas Instruments, Synopsys, Wipro, TCS, Qualcomm, AMD India and Intel.

Realty cos spin land deals

With land increasingly becoming a scarce resource in Gurgaon, prominent real estate developers such as DLF, Unitech, Omaxe and Ansals are now approaching textile companies for completely buying out their mills or setting up joint ventures to develop commercial or residential real estate projects.

Interestingly, according to a top official in the Haryana government, of the 156 CLU (change in land usage) proposals received by the state, more than 100 are from industrial land which has been allotted to textile companies.

In Gurgaon, House of Pearl Fashions (HOPF) has entered into a 47.5: 52.5 joint venture for a commercial project on a 9-acre plot on the Delhi Jaipur highway with the Delhi-based real estate firm Ansal API. As per the deal, Ansal API would obtain the necessary government approvals and construct the property. Similarly, Orient Craft, one of Indias largest textile exporter, entered into a collaboration with real estate firm Besteck for developing a 6 lakh sq ft IT space in Gurgaon.

Unitech’s Chandra to Invest $720 Million in Hotels

Unitech Ltd. Chairman Ramesh Chandra said his Indian real-estate company plans to invest $720 million in four years building 28 hotels with partners including Marriott International Inc., the worlds biggest hotelier.

Four hotels are being built and another 10 will be under construction by the end of the year, Chandra said today in an interview in Gurgaon, near New Delhi. Four of these hotels will be operated by Bethesda, Maryland-based Marriott, he said.

Per capita annual income in India has risen 86 percent since 2000, spurring Marriott, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. and InterContinental Hotels Group Plc to build properties. India may be one of the top five destinations for business travelers in a decade from 18th now, according to the London-based World Travel & Tourism Council.

Residents oppose proposed multiplex in GK-II

RESIDENTS of Greater Kailash-II are up in arms against a proposed multiplex at the Savitri Cinema complex to which the Supreme Court has given its assent.

Delhiites were enthusiastic about multiplexes a couple of years ago but the parking problems, congestion and traffic jams that have followed in their wake have made them do a rethink. And now, GK-II residents have said they are ready to accept DLF Universals proposed multiplex so long as it is far from their houses.

We are not happy with the Supreme Court order. We have no other option now but to wait for the operation of the commercial building and see what problems crop up. When we see the problems we will approach the courts again. We have to approach the traffic police too so the traffic flow can be smooth, says V K Gauba, former general secretary of GK-IIs RWA. DLF says the proposed multiplex will not inconvenience anybody. We have managed to build townships and have done it well. We have not really been able to develop the plan for this project due to litigation but we will make sure we dont inconvenience anyone in the area, says Shalini Wadhwa from DLF Corporate Communications.

KLM-Northwest, Air France to have integrated teams in India

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France today announced the beginning of a new phase of cooperation in the Indian market with the two organizations integrating their local teams in the region.

The corporate head office of both Air France and KLM – Northwest India is moving from New Delhi to Gurgaon to accommodate the combined teams in a new joint location.

The office relocation from Delhi to Gurgaon will impact the All India Customer Service contacts of both airlines as the Sales & Service Centre for reservations and fares and the Flying Blue Customer Service Centre for members of the joint Air France – KLM loyalty program will also move to Gurgaon.
