THE Punjab Urban Development and Housing Department will soon be coming out with a concrete policy on urban development, including housing projects and malls. We are working day and night to give shape to a policy for planned urban development across the state, said Punjab Housing Secretary Arun Goyal.
Permission for new mall projects is being withheld by the government till the framing of new guidelines. The Urban Development Department is seeking clarifications from developers on various accounts, including proximity to polluting industries and safety standards. A mall of Ansals coming up in Greater Mohali has been given 15 days time to answer the clarifications sought by the department, said a company official. TDI and Westend malls, also coming up in Greater Mohali, are also awaiting approval. While the government is keen to review projects approved by the previous regime, it does not wish to deter investors and let already depleting revenues from stamps and registration owing to slump in real estate projects to plunge further.
Fittest will survive Close to 40 malls are coming up across the state. While eight to ten malls are coming up in and around Ludhiana, more than half-a-dozen are underway at Zirakpur on the Delhi-Chandigarh Road. While most malls are coming up in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar, even smaller towns such as Khanna, Nabha, Mandi Gobindgarh and Bathinda are catching the fancy of some big players.
