Gurgaon Real Estate : Inspired by Gurgaon & Navi Mumbai, Lucknow will get clone of its own

Filed under:

Lucknow : SEEMINGLY inspired by the rise of Gurgaon and Navi Mumbai as booming commercial hubs on the outskirts of Delhi and Mumbai, respectively, the Mulayam Singh Yadav government has set the ball rolling to develop a clone of its own on the industrial corridor between Lucknow and Kanpur.

According to sources in the Industries Department, an extensive survey of the area is already on and various sectors relating to information technology, garment manufacturing and tourism have been identified.

This move will take shape under the newly-constituted LIDA (Lucknow Industrial Development Authority), which has spotted about 40,000 hectares of land on both sides of the Lucknow-Unnao Highway, to be notified for industrial development.

The initial survey of the area has been done via satellite, sources said. They added that the Industries Department, with help from the Revenue Department, will now conduct a baseline survey to detail areas to be earmarked for specific sectors.

Once the survey of the area is complete, a Master Plan will be formulated for the development of this industrial corridor, said a Secretary-level officer with LIDA.

The official added that with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) deciding to set up a branch in Lucknow, the garment sector will be on top of the priority list.

With the arrival of NIFT, and existing chikan craft sector, garment industry can be given a real push in UP by LIDA, the official said.

LIDA officials believe that the Amausi Airport, which already hosts international flights, will help improve business opportunities for companies setting up base with LIDA help.

The BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) sector—call centres—is the other big-ticket item on the plan. Since multi-national companies are planning to make Lucknow their base, they are also looking for places to set up their call centres, said government officials.

Apart from this, the other major area that has been identified by the government for promotion under LIDA is education. Officials hope a variety of educational institutions will come up in this corridor. Besides, industrial units involved in the leather business can set up ancillary units in this LIDA-backed corridor, said officials.

Zoom in on the action

A headline in the newspaper reads: Mass Rapid Transit system (MRTS) to link Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar. Another reads: A new airport planned at Noida/Greater Noida, Panvel at Mumbai, SEZ being planned at Navi Mumbai. These snippets may seem arbitrary to readers. But if you collect those bits and pieces, and do a veracity check, you could get the pulse on residential property trends. Trying to guess where property prices are heading is a tough one. But if know what development is taking place in ones region — may be a new railway station, airport, SEZ a few kilometres away — one could

Would you, as a personnel manager, hire someone past his 40s on the strength of a six-month certificate course in business administration? Offhand, our guess is the answer would be, perhaps not, unless there are other strong pluses. Which brings us to the management programmes of this kind devised by the defence ministrys directorate-general, resettlement (DGR) for officers facing retirement. IIM Lucknow staged the first such certificate course towards the end of 2004; IIM Ahmedabad and MDI Gurgaon have joined the list; the DGR is getting others in, too. The sponsored candidate pays 60% and the DGR the rest. The
