Gurgaon: Building on a faultline
Swank malls, commercial towers, upmarket highrise residential complexes — Gurgaon’s latest prize building block is right on the Sohna faultline.
Says Delhi-based architect Sudhir Vohra: “The Sohna Fault line lies between the Delhi Ridge and Sohna Town and falls between the Arjangarh and Manesar outcrops. What this means is that all of the newly-developed area in Gurgaon has come on the fault line itself.”
While private builders have made a beeline to Gurgaon during the past decade, the Haryana government paved the way with concessions and privileges. Now, with very little space remaining in and around the city, the Haryana government has started granting licences for construction of highrises on the Gurgaon-Sohna Road, near the faultline.
Around two-dozen residential and commercial complexes are expected to come up on the Sohna Road. A study conducted by Haryana Institute of Public Administration has shown that Gurgaon, falling in a High Damage Risk Zone, is prone to as many as 22 kinds of disasters.
