Committees to seek ‘consensus’ before land acquisition

Following the CPMs recent decision of acquiring land for industries only after all parties involved reach a consensus, the Urban Development department of the state government ordered all development authorities in the state on Tuesday to form land procurement committees. The committees would be assigned the job of purchasing land for setting up industries. We will not take land from people without their consent, Ashok Bhattacharya, Minister for Urban Development, said.

The proposed committees will follow the Dankuni model, where a procurement panel was set up last year to buy land for the Rs 33,000-crore DLF housing project. The Dankuni committee comprises government officials and members of panchayat samitis and gram panchayats.

After its defeat in the panchayat polls, the government is reconstituting the committee for the DLF project that was supposed to come up on the 4,840 acres of land, close to the Tata Motors project site. The Opposition has won the panchayat samiti and a large number of gram panchayats seats in Dankuni. We will have to restructure the committee, said Bhattacharya.

Land acquisition money-spinner for realtors

Real Estate companies are making a killing even in the land acquisition process. As they announce plans of setting up projects in a particular area and start buying real estate, land prices in and around that area normally shoot up in anticipation of the development. This usually leads to a huge difference in the price at which the developer buys the first acre and the last acre. However, as his average land acquisition price is much less than the final market price, he makes a substantial notional profit. Consider this. A well-known developer recently acquired about 100 acres in Delhis

Gurgaon starts land acquisition With the group of ministers (GoM), headed by Union finance minister P Chidambaram, giving the green signal to the Delhi-Gurgaon Metro stretch, the way for Metro connectivity to Gurgaon has been cleared. Considering the fact that Haryana government will have to pay more for the project in case of further escalation of cost due to delay in handing over the land needed for the completion of the project by August 2010, Gurgaon administration has already started its process for land acquisition on war scale. The action plan has been prepared for this purpose. We are quite sure

The nuts and bolts of appropriating agricultural land

The issue of land acquisition for the setting up of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) has focused national attention on the loss of agricultural land. Addressing a National Development Council meeting on December 23, 2006, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: I agree that we must minimise the diversion of agricultural land and, given the choice, must opt for using wasteland for non-agricultural purposes. However, it must be kept in mind that industrialisation is a national necessity if we have to reduce the pressure on agriculture and provide gainful, productive employment to millions of our youth who see no future in agriculture.
