Alcatel-Lucent is largest equipment co in India
The Indian arm of Alcatel-Lucent, the submarine cables-to-satellite communications company, has emerged as the largest telecom equipment firm in India. With a combined market share of about 70% in submarine cables, 50% each in CDMA and landline segments and a major portion of the GSM business, the entity now towers over its peers.
Although the top officials at Alcatel-Lucent didnt share the numbers for the Indian entity, some guesstimates could work. At present, projects under execution by this entity, along with its Indian partner ITI, are 5 million GSM lines for BSNL and 1 million GSM lines for MTNL. If we consider that BSNLs total tender for 20 million GSM lines, which was valued at about Rs 20,000 crore, the two GSM projects alone would bring in over $1 billion for the company.
In addition, there are the projects for 5 lakh ADSL lines for MTNL and more than 2 million ADSL lines for BSNL that the company is executing. Also there are the submarine cables businesses the company undertakes for VSNL, Bharti Airtel and RelComm, the equipment and services based on CDMA technology to Reliance Communications (RelComm) and Tata Tele, other GSM-based services to BSNL and MTNL, and also the broadband and landline-based services that the comapny does for a host of Indian telcoms including the two public sector giants.
