Alcatel-Lucent is largest equipment co in India

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

The Indian arm of Alcatel-Lucent, the submarine cables-to-satellite communications company, has emerged as the largest telecom equipment firm in India. With a combined market share of about 70% in submarine cables, 50% each in CDMA and landline segments and a major portion of the GSM business, the entity now towers over its peers.

Although the top officials at Alcatel-Lucent didnt share the numbers for the Indian entity, some guesstimates could work. At present, projects under execution by this entity, along with its Indian partner ITI, are 5 million GSM lines for BSNL and 1 million GSM lines for MTNL. If we consider that BSNLs total tender for 20 million GSM lines, which was valued at about Rs 20,000 crore, the two GSM projects alone would bring in over $1 billion for the company.

In addition, there are the projects for 5 lakh ADSL lines for MTNL and more than 2 million ADSL lines for BSNL that the company is executing. Also there are the submarine cables businesses the company undertakes for VSNL, Bharti Airtel and RelComm, the equipment and services based on CDMA technology to Reliance Communications (RelComm) and Tata Tele, other GSM-based services to BSNL and MTNL, and also the broadband and landline-based services that the comapny does for a host of Indian telcoms including the two public sector giants.

Govindraj Ethiraj: Setting expectations for 2007

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

Living in Mumbai, I am somehow bound to the “Will Mumbai become Shanghai?” phrase and all its connotations and interpretations. Before I come to my submission on our state of great expectations, a few words on the Shanghai syndrome.

First, Mumbai should look for a new phrase. That’s because, to my mind, Delhi has already become “Shanghai”. Sure, Delhi is not a port city or the commercial capital. But using the usual extrapolation of Shanghai to mean high-quality infrastructure, visible administrative determination (for whatever reasons) to clean up a mess and so on, Delhi scores.

Delhi is the only city in India where there are visible infrastructure improvements in short periods. Sure, Gurgaon residents are howling about the extra hour they spend on the approach to Delhi, but if you ask me, I see the men and machines working day and night to find some solutions. Unlike Mumbai, a city that took three decades to decide to build one bridge across a creek.

Now to narrate two somewhat disparate examples. Remember Mumbai’s highway road signs (amidst crumbling or dug-up roads) requesting you to bear with the present for a better future? I don’t know about you but when I read them, I expected solutions that would fundamentally alter the road infrastructure in the island city. Far from it. As I see it, this high-decibel signage mostly meant that some roads or pavements would be re-layered. Yet, here I was thinking life was going to fundamentally change.

Time to cash in?

Sunday, December 24th, 2006

We maintained a positive bias towards Crew BOS in July this year, when the companys stock was quoting around a level of Rs 145. The company had posted an earnings per share (EPS) of Rs 12.5, on net sales of around Rs 130 crore in FY06. Exports account for over 90% of its sales revenues. The stock has since surged to Rs 230, offering returns of around 58% in just under five months.

Business: The company is in the leather and fashion accessories business. It derives 65% of its revenues by supplying for well- known names like GAP, NEXT, FOSSIL in Europe and the US. It has been able to sustain a high growth of over 40% in its net sales, and an even higher growth in profits. It aims to expand its capacity for production of fashion accessories and leather products through another plant. The plant, planned in Neemrana region, could help in consolidation of smaller units in Gurgaon region, by bringing their operations together.

The promoters have already gone for a preferential allotment of warrants to themselves, eligible for shares at a later stage. An equity dilution plan is on the anvil by raising up to $25 million through the best suited route. The FII holding in the company is around 22%, and it has sought approvals, to raise the limit to 49%.

Realty prices in Tier-II cities high

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Realty prices in Tier II cities have shot up by as much as 40% in the last two years, one of the highest in the past decade. While the opening up of the financial sector, rationalisation of income tax and loan policies and well-paid IT jobs have been the primary reasons for this, the trend of youngsters separating from their families to set up their own homes has also added to the growth in demand.

Says Mumbai-based architect Hafeez Contractor, The rise in realty prices in Tier II cities is disproportionate to the earning capacities which is a unhealthy sign in the long run. There is a lot of land available in Tier II cities for development. However, a slackening of prices seems unlikely, as prices will continue to rise further. A recent Nasscom-KPMG study has revealed that Tier II cities - Kochi, Pune, Nagpur, Chandigarh and Jaipur - offer more advantages to ITES companies. Currently, in cities like Meerut and Jaipur, pre-launch projects are being sold between Rs 2,400 and 4,500 per square yard, whereas, in Ambala, it starts at Rs 3,000 per square yard. In Gurgaon, the prices start at Rs 6,000 per square yard.

Customers now have to shell out as much as four times the money for buying flats in cities like Ahmedabad. A 3 BHK flat in Ahmedabad, which used to cost Rs 8.5 lakh two years ago, is now priced at Rs 31 lakh, says a leading builder based there. In comparison, a 2 BHK and 3 BHK flat in Gurgaon would cost Rs 45 lakhs and 58 lakhs, respectively.

However, in other cities like Nagpur, Nasik, Ludhiana and Punjab, land prices and built-up area prices are highly disproportionate. Built-up area prices of residential property is lower than the land prices. Land prices in these areas are on a continous rise. With about 34 metropolitan cities in this country, Ahmedabad holds the sixth position in terms of population, which is larger than even Pune. According to Joy Sanyal of TrammellCrow Megharaj, Ahmedabad is soon going to be considered a flourishing metro very soon. Development in Gujarat is not city-centric, but spreads across the state. Therefore, there is more room for development in the city. Gujarat contributes 12% of the GDP of the country, while it constitutes an area of just 6 or 7%.
