Most factories and industrial units here remained closed today as their workers joined an all-India strike to protest the economic policies of the government.

Tension prevailed in some areas as trade union activists stopped the few workers who were proceeding to their workplaces.

The agitators stopped vehicles at some places but traffic on the National Highway was not disrupted, police sources said.

They also broke windowpanes of a few buses but no injuries had been reported, the sources, added adding a strong police posse had been deployed to maintain law and order.

Gurgaon had witnessed pitches battles between police and agitating workers in July after police lathicharged workers of the Honda company injuring scores of them.

AITUC leader Gurudas Dasgupta said 85 per cent of the industrial units and factories in Guragon, including the plant of Maruti Udyog, were closed.

hip hop and gangsta rap have got the world going crazy. Its joints, baggy clothes and apathetic, badass attitude is being mimicked by youth across India. To what end? Transported thousands of miles from the States, what pop expression is hip hop mouthing in India?

Born in Jamaica, hip hop as it is now popular in India, moved to the US in the 60s and became a powerful expression of the struggle of black people in America, suffering from poverty and racial atrocities. Artists like Kool Herc and Afrika Bambatta, and now, Eminem, Dr Dre, Tupac and Run DMC have imbued their music with this specific history and culture for over 20 years. Rap — a quick-shooting aggressive offshoot of hip hop — is an amplified voice of inner city scapes, sex, drugs, violence and rebellion.

But much of this is lost on the contemporary Indian hip hop generation. The affectations are all in place: the reluctance to cut hair, the loose clothes, the wrist bands, the casual walk (the cigarettes in backpacks.) But the self-driven Hyundai Accents and the coffee-hopping, bar-hopping affluence is a dead giveaway. These kids don’t know the first thing about deprivation or violence, but they’ve got the look.

In India it’s all about fashion — about wearing attitude. Whether it’s the Sarojini Nagar and Fashion Street middle-roaders buying the fake abusive T-shirts, the bulky sneakers, and the fancy CK boxers, or the the wealthy in-crowds of Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Pune with their bling bling jewellery, the mantra is the same: Everything Goes.

But music has a way of liberating you despite yourself. With its attitude of “life is full of s*** and I can handle it”, hip hop is perhaps just what the Indian youth wanted to hear. A form of personal liberation away from life ‘chalked out’ by elders. A season of rebellion. A go at cutting a mediocre record — and perhaps annoying parents — before lining up for the inevitable mbas, or being shipped off abroad to ‘home country USA’. As 20-year-old Gursimran from Delhi says, “It’s not about dressing like a clown. The music is liberating. The attitude has no strings attached. It’s fun, and it speaks my language.”

So even if it’s only suburbia they are rebelling against, the young and restless are still rebelling.
