The bandh called by labour organisations to denounce police atrocities against workers of Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Pvt. Limited (HMSI) passed peacefully on Thursday. Most business establishments, shopping malls and schools remained open.
A Gurgaon-based trade union took out a rally at Rajiv Chowk here and tried to force shopkeepers to down their shutters. However, policemen in riot-gear, who were present in strength, ensured that the shops remained opened.
The convenor of the National Democratic Alliance and former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, and the senior Left leader, Gurudas Dasgupta, visited the Civil Hospital and met the injured workers again.
Talking to the media persons later, Mr. Dasgupta said multi-national companies were inflicting atrocities on the workers and a nation-wide protest would soon be launched against them.
Mr. Fernandes had written to Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat seeking his intervention to ensure that the workers got justice.

Terming the situation in Gurgaon as serious and disgraceful, the womens wing of CPI(M) on Thursday alleged that some senior Honda employees had misbehaved with women and had assaulted workers.
All India Democratic Womens Association (AIDWA), whose six-member delegation led by its President Subhashini Ali had visited Gurgaon yesterday, said the workers were heavily under paid and 24 per cent of their salary was deducted towards Provident Fund in clear violation of labour laws.
The situation in Gurgaon, for months, is serious and disgraceful for the whole country. The government should not allow a foreign company to break the laws of the land, misbehave with workers and women, Ali told reporters here.
A woman worker had resigned earlier after a senior Japanese Manager had tried to molest her while another official was sent home for kicking a worker and making a Sikh remove his turban, Ali alleged.

The malls in Gurgaon have in the past few years become the pride of the satellite town.
But after the recent clash between the Honda factory workers and police, the malls wore a deserted look on Tuesday.
While local residents decided to remain indoors, even visitors across the border in Delhi did not venture out. And the parkings, which are normally jam packed, were vacant.
But apart from the malls, life went on as usual. The city is normal only these malls have been affected 50 per cent, says a resident of the area.
This isnt surprising as the trouble and rioting has been taking place in a very limited area.

They are hip and flying high on incentives but just how much of their income flows to their home towns?
Prashant Rai focuses on Hill youths working in call centres across the country Business process outsourcing (BPO) outfits and Call Centres involved in performing all the peripheral activities associated with companies right from taking calls to documentation have flourished at breathtaking speed since their arrival some five years ago. In fact it has been predicted by various research firms that by 2008 the sector size will be anywhere between $30 billion to $50 billion.
The number of BPO companies functioning across the country has also grown. From a mere handful it was some 500 units in 2004. Evidently what started as a niche service provider has evolved into a whole new industry.
Call Centres have taken the young in most metros by storm. Not surprising since India has a high rate of unemployment and some 50 million English-speaking people (which comes handy in a profession where English is the accepted medium of communication). So while recruiters gloat over the fact that labour costs in India is almost one tenth of what it is in America and Europe. The young and educated have discovered that this new industry offers high incentives and may be a key to a fast paced, upbeat lifestyle.

The millennium city may well be touted as a realtors paradise, but what is generally overlooked is the stark contrast between areas developed by colonisers and the old city of Gurgaon.
The latter seems to be stuck in a time warp, as it has been neglected both by the administration and developers. So you will neither find highrises nor malls — which abound in new Gurgaon — in this part of the city. Instead, narrow, broken roads and encroachments are a common sight in the area, most of which is divided into HUDA sectors.
Said C L Das, a resident of sector 4, A lot of hype has been created about malls and highrises in the localities developed by builders without taking into account the fragile state of the infrastructure.
Retailers in local markets of these areas feel that malls are poaching on their customers as well as power supply.
